Screw Piles Cost in Ontario: What Moves the Price

A per pile number from a price list and the quote you end up holding rarely match. The gap has five causes, and one of them is a rule most price lists skip. Here is what moves screw piles cost in Ontario, and how the bill compares with concrete footings.

Direct Answer: How much do screw piles cost in Ontario? There is no flat price. Pile count, depth, site access, engineering and mobilization set it. On a permitted deck in Oakville or Milton, a professional engineer determines the depth, spacing and size of the piles, so a per pile figure is not a quote.

TL;DR

  • Screw piles have no flat price in Ontario. Pile count, depth, access, engineering and mobilization set it.

  • A per pile figure becomes a total only once the pile count is set.

  • On a permitted deck in Oakville or Milton, a professional engineer determines the depth, spacing and size of the piles.

  • Depth is the line that can move on install day. Ask how an extension is charged.

  • Tight access adds time, and mobilization is a larger share of a small job.

  • Screw piles aren't always cheaper than concrete. Compare the total installed cost of each job.

Price the job from your plan, not from a per pile number.

What sets screw piles cost in Ontario

In short: Five things set the price: how many piles, how deep they go, how easy the site is to reach, the engineering, and the trip to your address.

Screw piles cost what the structure and the ground ask for. Postech, which makes the piles Postech Halton installs, ties the price to the number of piles, pile diameter, site conditions and region. A screw pile and a helical pile are the same product, so the same rules set helical piles cost.

Picture two decks of the same size in Oakville. One is low and open, with a wide side gate. The other carries a roof and sits behind a narrow gate on a slope. The second calls for more support under the roof posts and more time on site. Same footprint, different price.

Every structure you want on piles

Postech Halton reviews access, loads, soil and drawings before it plans screw pile foundations in Halton Region. A cost per pile doesn't become a total until the pile count is known.

Screw pile cost per pile: why an engineer sets the pile count

In short: On a permitted deck in Oakville or Milton, an engineer decides how many piles, what size and how deep. That work belongs in the price from the start.

A screw pile cost per pile figure turns into a price only after someone qualified sets the count. On a permitted deck in Oakville or Milton, that person is a professional engineer, so engineering is part of the job from the first quote.

Online charts read a pile count off a deck's length and width. The Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC), the National Research Council body that evaluates building products, puts the decision with the designer. For the steel pile systems it evaluates, a registered professional engineer "must determine the number and spacing" of the piles. The engineer also gives the building authority a signed and sealed certificate for the project.

Any estimate of helical piles cost Ontario builders can rely on starts with that rule. Two Halton towns print it on their deck permit drawings. Oakville's say a professional engineer must determine "the depth, spacing and size" of helical piles, based on the soil condition. Milton's guide carries the same note. Both ask for the manufacturer's information and CCMC approval with the permit application.

Question

A per pile price list answers

A quote from your plan answers

How many piles?

A guess from the deck size

What size and how deep?

One standard pile

A size and depth for each post and your soil

Who signs for it?

No one is named

A professional engineer

What goes to the town?

Nothing

Other municipalities set their own requirements, so check with your building department. Then ask each installer whether the engineer's documents are in the quote. See how a deck pile layout is planned for what the count depends on.

Pile depth and installation torque: the cost line that can move

In short: The soil sets the depth, and the torque reading confirms it. Ask how extra length is charged before the machine arrives.

Pile depth is the one line on a quote that can change on install day. A pile has to pass the frost line and keep turning until it reaches soil that can carry the load. Postech puts the frost line at "typically 4 to 6 feet in most of Canada and the northern United States".

The 4 foot minimum on Oakville's and Milton's deck drawings belongs to concrete piers, the kind poured in a Sonotube. For helical piles, the same sheets leave the required depth to the engineer, based on soil conditions.

Installation torque tells the crew when a pile is deep enough. Torque is the turning force the machine needs to drive the pile. In Postech's words: "When the required torque value is reached, load capacity is confirmed."

Soil isn't even across a yard. One pile can reach its torque at the planned length. The next, a few steps away, can need an extension, an added length of shaft, because the firm layer sits lower at that corner.

Three questions settle the depth line before work starts:

  • What pile length is in the price?

  • How is an extension charged if a pile goes deeper?

  • Will I get the torque record for each pile?

Postech Halton records installation torque for the project and inspection file.

Site access and mobilization

In short: Access sets how long the crew is on site. Mobilization is one trip, so it is a bigger share of a small job.

Site access decides how long the crew spends at your address. The piles go in with a compact machine that has to reach every post. Postech says its installers use equipment that fits "a standard 36-inch gate opening". It gives 3 to 6 hours for most deck installations, "depending on pile count and site access".

A narrower gate, a slope or a planted bed in the path adds time. Photos let the installer price that before the visit. Send:

  • The gate, with its width

  • The route from the street to each post

  • Any slope, steps or planting in the way

Mobilization is what it costs to bring the crew and the machine to your street. The trip is the same for a shed as for a full addition, so on a small job it is a larger share of the bill. A shed quoted alone pays for the whole trip. Quoted together with the deck, the two split it.

Cost of screw piles vs concrete footings

In short: Screw piles aren't always the cheaper footing. Compare the total installed cost of each job, start to finish.

The cost of screw piles means little until it sits beside the whole concrete job. A Sonotube footing is more than a form and a mix. Someone digs each hole, hauls the soil, sets the forms, brings in the concrete and waits for it to cure.

Cost line

Screw piles

Concrete footings in Sonotubes

Digging

Minimal excavation

A hole at each footing

Materials

Steel piles and caps

Forms, concrete and delivery

Soil to remove

Little displaced soil

Spoil from every hole

Wait before framing

Curing time first

Yard repair

Usually little

Often lawn and landscape restoration

Precast deck blocks skip the footing altogether, but Oakville and Milton allow them only on low decks that are not attached to the house and carry no roof.

Postech, the manufacturer, describes the total project cost of screw piles as "typically comparable to or lower than concrete when excavation and site restoration are factored in". That won't hold on every site. Concrete is also still the right choice for basements, large slabs and continuous foundation walls.

Ask for both quotes on the same scope, and ask for the warranty document as well. Postech says its installations carry a limited lifetime warranty against frost heave when a certified dealer installs them.

Screw piles cost FAQ

In short: Six short answers on price, pile count, self-installation, concrete and what a quote includes.

How much are screw piles in Ontario?

There is no single price. Pile count, depth, site access, engineering and mobilization set it, and the cost of helical piles follows the same five factors. Postech Halton prices each job from the plan and the site.

How much does a screw pile cost on its own?

It depends on the pile. A larger shaft, a deeper install or a hard-to-reach post each raise the price of that pile, and the trip to your address is shared across all of them.

How many screw piles do I need for a deck?

Deck size alone doesn't tell you. The count follows the beams, spans, height and loads. On a permitted deck in Oakville or Milton, a professional engineer determines the spacing and size of the piles, and that fixes the count.

Can I lower Postech screw piles cost by installing them myself?

No. Only certified Postech dealers install them. Postech's FAQ says "Self-installation is not covered under warranty", and that it would not meet building code requirements for permitted structures.

Are screw piles cheaper than concrete?

Not always. Set the screw pile foundation cost beside the full concrete job, with excavation, soil removal, curing time and yard repair counted, then compare the totals.

Does helical piles Ontario cost include engineering and the permit?

Ask each installer what the quote includes. In Oakville and Milton, the manufacturer's information and CCMC approval go in with the deck permit application, and an engineer determines the pile details. Permit requirements are set by your municipality, so confirm them for your address.
